Abstract

The volume Changes in Food Consumption in Asia: Effects on Production and Use of Upland Crops presents a number of analyses of agricultural economies in Asia, focusing on upland crops and their place in agriculture. The studies identify strong linkages among upland crops, rice, the agricultural industry and the economy as a whole. Various contributions demonstrate that commercialization of agricultural production, particularly in upland crops, is associated with rapid economic growth. Economic growth results in substantial changes in food consumption patterns. These, in turn, affect production of a wide range of crops.
