This volume contains the complete documentation presented in the seminar and a regional synthesis jointly organized by the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the Ministry of Agriculture of China at Wuxi city, Jingsu Province, China from 6 to 11 December, 1989. The formal report of the seminar is reproduced in full while the background papers and the country papers have been abridged both in the interest of saving space and avoiding duplication. Taken together, the documents contained in this volume present a comprehensive description of the issues discussed and the country experiences reviewed in the seminar.
