Abstract
This presentation-based publication examines how geospatial infrastructure can act as a driver of innovation, economic development, and disaster risk management, with a primary focus on Japan’s experience. It was presented at a regional UN workshop under the SPECA framework. The document highlights the role of UN‑GGIM‑AP (United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management for Asia and the Pacific) in promoting regional cooperation, capacity-building, and standardization in geospatial data management. It reviews major technological advancements in surveying and positioning, especially the integration of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) and CORS (Continuously Operating Reference Stations) networks enabling highly accurate, real-time positioning. [19_Japan__JunSato | PDF] A central theme is Japan’s concept of a “G‑spatial society,” where geospatial information is widely accessible and supports sectors such as disaster management, agriculture, infrastructure, transportation, and urban planning. The Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI) plays a key role by providing foundational geospatial data, national geodetic reference frameworks, and positioning infrastructure.
