Abstract

Several regional initiatives to promote development and cooperation of the Indo-China have been initiated during the 1990s. In this backdrop, the present study, made possible by the generous financial support from the Government of Japan, is prepared for the Forum for the Comprehensive Development of Indo-China, to be held in Tokyo on 26 and 27 February 1995. The purpose of this policy-oriented subregional study is to assist the Governments of Cambodia, the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and Viet Nam in identifying the means to strengthen subregional cooperation amongst them, as well as with their neighbouring economies of ASEAN. In particular, the study seeks to identify the forms of subregional cooperation in trade and investment and environmental planning that would be mutually beneficial. The study also examines the aspects of policy framework and institutional development for enhancing trade and investment as well as environmental management in Indo-China. Furthermore, the scope for strengthening linkages with the neighbouring dynamic economies of ASEAN is examined.
