Abstract

Biotechnology sector in the Asia-Pacific region has seen remarkable and rapid growth in the recent years due to policy push by governments and technological breakthroughs. According to a new research report by the international industry research and consultancy firm RNCOS, entitled ‘Asia-Pacific Biotechnology Market (2008–2012)’, the Asia-Pacific biotech market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of around 19% during 2010–2013. The research has also found that at the regional forefront, Japan and China are dominating this industry, while higher growth rates have been witnessed in emerging markets, such as Malaysia and India.

The biotechnology industry is cross-disciplinary and broadly encompasses areas such as pharmaceuticals, diagnostics, food, agriculture and environmental applications in the fields of bioremediation and waste treatment. The industry could be fostered and promoted with a conducive government policy environment, linkages with robust R&D institutes, protection of intellectual property rights, and opportunities for commercialization of research outputs. In this context, it is important to note that biotech innovations have to go through with the value chain of basic research, applied research, lab-scale and prototype development, clinical trials, verification and validation, production/manufacturing, marketing and post-marketing services. The biotechnology value chain, like other technology domains is becoming more complex due to globalization of various components of the value chain.
