Abstract
The topics described in the present review have been adapted in the light of the comments expressed by the Committee on Shipping, Transport and Communications at its recent session held at Bangkok, from 17-21 December 1990.
Chapter one, “Factors affecting the growth and development of transport and communications infrastructure and services in the ESCAP region,” describes the recent trends in the major factors which influenced the supply of infrastructure and the provision of services in the regional transport and communications sector.
Chapter two, “Surface transport in the ESCAP region 1990,” reviews the major trends and developments affecting the surface transport modes (including intermodal transport) of the ESCAP region during the past two to five years. In particular, it addresses the growth, improvement and productivity of transport assets, as well as the more significant policy changes or initiatives which had influenced the growth and development of the region’s maritime, railway, road and intermodal transport facilities and services.
Chapter three, “Air transport in the ESCAP region” covers a brief review of developments and trends in air transport. The Asia and Pacific region has experienced a dramatic growth in air transport during the last decade as a result of the emergence of the ESCAP region as the fastest growing in the world in terms of economic performance and trade.
This review was completed at the beginning of September 1990. Much of the data and information presented on developments and trends in 1990 is based on the information published or provided by member governments. The material contained in Chapter three is based on the contribution made by the Regional Office of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) at Bangkok.
