Abstract
In 1984 the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) of the United Nations carried out a review of urban land policies and policy measures in 12 member countries in the Asia-Pacific Region. The study was carried out by Mr. Louis Menezes and officers of the Human Settlements Section of the ESCAP/UNIDO Division of Industry, Human Settlements and Technology, and was published in 1985 as the report, Land Policies in Human Settlements (1) . The purpose of the study and report was to assist member countries to review and improve their urban land policies and management by providing, as stated in the report's subtitle, ... " a regional overview on current practice towards more effective utilisation of urban land". Since 1985 there have been number of developments in Asian countries that can further assist national governments to improve their urban land policies and management. This paper does not attempt to update the Land Policies in Human Settlements report but to focus on selected developments that can provide demonstrations, experience and lessons useful to other countries developing their urban land policies and management.
