Abstract
This publication reviews the collection, use, and comparability of port statistics across the Asia-Pacific region, focusing primarily on physical trade and port performance indicators. It identifies key user groups—ports, shipping companies, governments, and international agencies—and outlines their statistical needs for planning, monitoring, and policy-making. The study defines a comprehensive framework of required statistics, including trade flows, vessel calls, berth, crane, and labor productivity, as well as utilization measures. By examining examples from selected ports in the region, it highlights significant inconsistencies in definitions, measurement units, and reporting practices that hinder inter-port comparisons. The report concludes by emphasizing the need for standardized statistical systems and introduces the RMSS model as a tool to produce harmonized, comparable maritime statistics across ESCAP member countries
