Abstract
South and South-West Asia Development Monitor Number 10, 22 November 2012.
The Development Monitor is a bimonthly electronic newsletter, launched in early 2012 (issued on a monthly basis initially), which provides an overview of the work and activities undertaken by the ESCAP South and South-West Asia Office and conferences and knowledge products of relevance to the subregion. The newsletter also provides a compilation of news and articles on themes covered by the ESCAP SSWA work programme.
On 6–7 November 2012, representatives of South and South-West Asia member States met in New Delhi to deliberate on common challenges and opportunities in the area of energy security and sustainable use of energy. The meeting served as the subregional preparatory meeting for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Energy Forum to be held in Vladivostok, Russian Federation in 2013.
According to a background study prepared for the meeting by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), countries in the subregion face a number of energy challenges, including energy poverty, lack of available supplies, poor energy infrastructure and transport facilities, a situation which exacerbates social vulnerabilities and inequalities.
