Abstract
Since 2002 a series of activities have been organized by the UNESCAP secretariat on the use of space technology for disaster management under the Regional Space Applications Programme for Sustainable Development for Asia the Pacific (RESAP), as suggested by the Second Ministerial Conference on Space Applications for Sustainable Development, held in 1999 in New Delhi. Promotion of relevant regional cooperative mechanisms has been identified as the priority of RESAP. This topic has also been the focus of three regional working groups in recent years. With financial support from France, Japan, the Republic of Korea, and in-kind contributions from China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, these activities have covered broad technical, institutional and policy issues related to the operational use of space information for effective disaster management.
